About the Rocket Boil 'N' Cook™

The Rocket Boil 'N' Cook™ was developed by Paul McFarlane with a clear purpose: to provide a safe, efficient, and versatile cooking solution that also boils water for clean, safe drinking. The initial prototype was developed and successfully trialed in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, where it proved to be a practical and effective solution in real-world conditions.

Originally created to help alleviate the challenges of open-fire cooking in lower-income countries, the Rocket Boil 'N' Cook™ also addresses the urgent need for safe water and cooking in the aftermath of natural disasters, during times of conflict, or in refugee camps. Paul’s Story

In 2011, after spending a month at the Asurumba Care Centre in Papua New Guinea, I returned to New Zealand deeply moved and inspired. I began thinking about how I could support the people of PNG, the Pacific Islands, and other countries facing similar daily challenges.

One scene stayed with me: women cooking three times a day on the ground, using large open fires that wasted precious wood. I realized there had to be a better way—something more efficient, safer, and sustainable.

That experience led me to design a stainless-steel rocket cooker, built not only to cook food efficiently using minimal fuel, but also to boil water at the same time. This dual-purpose design makes it especially valuable in areas where clean drinking water is scarce or during natural disasters.

The cooker is ideal for everyday use, emergency situations, and outdoor activities like camping or hunting. It runs on small bush sticks fed into the base and can hold 15 liters of water in a surrounding water jacket. Once the fire is going, you can place a variety of pots, frying pan, hotplate or wok directly on top.

This rocket cooker is extremely fuel-efficient. During a traditional PNG boil-up (with taro, banana, chicken, etc.), I cooked for two hours and only used about 1.4 kilograms of sticks, enough to feed seven people. The water will boil in an efficient time of 5-7 minutes per liter (may vary depending on type of bush sticks used).

Because it uses so little wood, the burden of gathering firewood is greatly reduced. And with every use, families have the added benefit of safe, boiled drinking water.

This means families spend less time and effort collecting wood, helping to preserve local resources.
